While walking, my eyes are scanning rapidly
looking for those defining images that will
accurately record what we have seen. As I
photograph, I notice that I am constantly
adjusting the focus of my lens through the full
range from closest focus to absolute distance -
16 inches to infinity.
Likewise, my mind is zooming from the immediate
to the theoretical. Here, now, is my heartbeat,
the hot sun teasing forth beads of sweat from my
forehead, the light caress on my face of a cool
breeze from up the valley, the intricate shape
of a small leaf pressed close to the ground
which I have bent down to examine. So long ago
that I hiked in the mountains. My life now is
entirely in the city.
